As the film funding institution of the German federal states of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, FFHSH provides subsidies for low- and high-budget feature films as well as for TV productions of exceptional quality. It offers assistance in all stages of the production and the exploitation of films, i.e. screenplays, production, distribution, world sales, and festival presentation. Two committees decide on the allocation of the means of 8.3 about 11 million euros p.a., which are given as conditionally repayable loans. Funding criteria include a high quality of content and an extensive reference to Hamburg or Schleswig-Holstein.

Furthermore, FFHSH is an important contact point for producers, scriptwriters, directors, distributors and exhibitors. The Film Commission of FFHSH provides comprehensive advice, know-how and qualified services to German and international producers and filmmakers who intend to shoot in Northern Germany. Established links with the relevant local authorities and experts help to ensure a smooth filming experience in Schleswig-Holstein, the most northern state bordering on Denmark, and in Hamburg, the second-largest city in Germany.

FFHSH keeps track of the latest developments in film and television; it assesses facts and intervenes where necessary. Various events and seminars on industry-related topics are part of the services offered, as are guidance and direct support for producers and filmmakers.
