Filmfonds-Wien
Objectives
The objectives of the Vienna Film Fund are strengthening and consolidating Vienna as a city of film and audiovisual media in international media and also saving the cultural diversity of Europe. Therefore it is essential for the Vienna Film Fund to help subsidize culture, economy and employment in the film industry of Vienna, Austria and all of Europe. It is also an important assignment of the fund to promote the Austrian Film.
Budget and kinds of subsidizing
The council of the city of Vienna finances the Vienna Film Fund budget of approximately 11,5 million euros per year. We give subsidies to film-makers in different phases of production: project-development (including script-writing), production, distribution and taking part in film festivals.
Business and cultural merits
A jury, that forms an opinion about the different subsidy-applications, makes funding decisions. Cultural, economic and artistic merits of the project are important. The European, and especially the Viennese or Austrian culture should attract interest in movie making. While producing a movie you have to spend at least 100% of the financial contribution of the Vienna Film Fund for film production facilities and skills existing in Vienna, employing local creative staff and filmmakers and/or having an onscreen-promotion of the city as a location. That is the so-called “Vienna Effect”, a film business-effect; you must prove before getting a subsidy.
Platform for dialogue
The Vienna Film Fund wants to have a hand in improving the qualification of filmmakers and their business. Therefore the fund offers different kinds of events and conferences to communicate. The fund was partner of the Sources2 and EAVE MEDIA programmes, which relate to the professional qualifications of filmmakers, work toward improving the training available in the audiovisual sector in Austria (e.g. training congress, Cined@ys) and is a joint organizer of meetings of producers (attended by representatives of Europe’s film sector, e.g. from France, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Italy and Slovenia).
